What drew you to create this film?
I was drawn to create this film as the start of my science communication as an aspiring astronomer and filmmaker. The idea was conceived in collaboration with Evelyn Bristol, whom I met during a physics research internship. The film highlights the intrinsic pull of the unknown and what lies beyond our Earth.
What does filmmaking mean to you?
Filmmaking is a way to communicate feelings as much as it is ideas. My favorite films have always been the ones where I come away enjoying the feel and mood of the piece as much as the story. Filmmaking in this sense is a way for me to bring to life truths and understandings that we cannot always fully articulate.
What advice would you give students or beginners that want to make films?
Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you’re the only one who wants to do it. Making a film worth making takes a lot of commitment and determination. Don’t let other people be the reason you don’t do it.
What films do you watch again and again?
Kogonada’s 2017 film Columbus is one I’ve seen recently that I’m thoroughly obsessed with tonally. Another favorite is Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko.
Beyond the Clouds will screen during the experimental film screening on Friday the 18th that starts at 1:15!
