We spoke with the director of the film “Tango in Twilight” Dr. Teresa Mular about filmmaking.
What drew me to create this film?
An act of absolute serendipity while visiting Buenos Aires , the city where I was born and raised . I was at a tango dance ( I’ve been tango dancing for many years ) and suddenly the disc jockey and organizer of that tango dance announced that women present should know there was a blind tango dancer sitting among the guests and that one should go to his table and take him out to the dance floor . I was caught in awe and immediately thought to myself “ wouldn’t this be a great subject for a documentary “ . I gave some thought to this idea and I decided to go and ask this fine gentleman if he would agree to be the subject of a documentary. He actually thought when I went to his seat if I wanted to take him out to dance . Although I did ask him for a dance later on that afternoon , my first question was about the idea of filming him . He told me he would think about it and few days later he agreed to it . And the rest is history!
What does filmmaking mean to me?
Filmmaking to me means the possibility for connecting individuals with a particular characteristic or idiosyncratic style that can awaken a sense of awe, admiration or appreciation in many more ways than one with an audience that will expand their understanding and knowledge about the subject analyzed and depicted in the film.
“ It takes two to tango “…in this case the film subject vis a vis the audience ( pun intended) .
What advice would I give students or beginners that want to make films?
I would suggest to follow their instincts , tell them that if they know what they want , the odds are they will get it and achieve it . To let them be themselves and have no fears . All beginnings are hard but when there’s passion and motivation, all is possible and a whole new world will open up with tremendous possibilities and satisfaction. Learn from the very beginnings of the cinema art . Don’t discard those silent films . They can speak louder that the most contemporary and loudest of films !
