An interview with the Director of RAM (Like the Verb), screening at the 2024 Mosaic World Film Festival.
During the casting process for a reality series, an openly gay Asian actor reconciles his sexuality with his career struggles. Rotoscoped with example-based synthesis technology.
1. What drew you to create this film?
Charlit Dae is a magnificent actor. I created the character of Ram for a different project that got scuttled by the pandemic and I did not want to lose his amazing embodiment of Ram.
2. What does filmmaking mean to you?
Filmmaking is another expression of art, which is a cultural shifter. The culture needs a shift, and I’m doing what I can to move it in the greatest direction.
3. What advice would you give students or beginners that want to make films?
Many people tell you not to wait, and just to make your art, and I agree with that. I think what should be remembered is that there is no equity in the filmmaking business, so if you’re from a systemically minoritized or historically marginalized community, you will have to make your art without the resources so many others get, time and time again. It’s not right, but it’s okay. Continue. Persevere. Create.
4. What films do you watch again and again?
Batman Returns, Moonlight, Addams Family Values, Cabin in the Sky, From Justin to Kelly, Dreamgirls
