An interview with the Director of Mis-Alignment: screening at the 2024 Mosaic World Film Festival.
When an engineer who destroys malfunctioning androids encounters a shocking abnormality in a rebellious patient, she risks everything to save her new friend and herself.
1. What drew you to create this film?
The concept for this film came to me while studying at AFI for my master’s. I wanted to explore a world where we coexist with artificial intelligence, but not in the usual “AI as the villain” way. Instead, I envisioned a film where AI characters are vulnerable, dealing with insecurities and mental health issues just like us. This idea is embodied in Veda, an AI character who struggles alongside humans. I also wanted to question what it means to truly live In our overworked society, we often become robotic in our pursuit of success, forgetting to appreciate life. This film is a reflection of those thoughts.
2. What does filmmaking mean to you?
Filmmaking means everything to me right now. Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love exploring life through the lens of cinema and telling stories that resonate with people, making them feel seen. It’s also about exploring different worlds and perspectives. For me, this is the only way to live.
3. What advice would you give students or beginners that want to make films?
My advice is to keep going. Breaking into this industry is tough, and making a living from it is even tougher. You have to do it because you truly love it. If filmmaking is your passion, keep working at it. Make films, learn from the process, and don’t get too hung up on quality at the beginning. Quality will come with experience. Just put your work out there and learn from each project.
4. What films do you watch again and again?
I’m not one to rewatch films often, but I do have my favorites. “Whiplash” is one of them. Lately, I’ve been on a big sci-fi kick, watching all the “Alien” movies. “Alien: Covenant” is probably my favorite right now.
