Get to know the filmmaker: TJ Hill

An interview with the Director of My Fair Dairy, screening at the 2024 Mosaic World Film Festival.

An exclusive behind the scenes making-of the original production of My Fair Dairy, written and directed by Kenny Lamaunt! This short film explores the creation process of artists yielding to their creativity as well as the will of the funding of an industry.

1. What drew you to create this film?

MFD: My filmmaking team was tasked to make a mockumentary and we have long admired the feature length works from Christopher Guest and Co. So we were excited to play in that sand box! Much of the scenes were improvised which we really hadn’t done before for a production and we were thrilled with the results thanks to an incredible cast!

Living with You: I was fascinated by Live Streaming Culture and its untapped potential for stories in film. As I was looking into it more I found it to be an interesting backdrop for obsession/stalking in the vein of Hitchcock. Other influences came from David Lynch and the many works of Satoshi Kon. Em, Jonathan, and myself met over dinner and talked about some aspects and the dialogue between a chat and the streamer.

2. What does filmmaking mean to you?

The aspect that I continue to love about filmmaking is during the shoot days where many different people that bring different strengths come together to make something happen. It is so exciting when the room feels they really nailed a shot or can see the whole thing come together.

3. What advice would you give students or beginners that want to make films?

Build up your team! You can’t do it by yourself.
Make smaller stories and make the lighting and sound fantastic! If you can do that on a small scale you can do it on a larger scale.

4. What films do you watch again and again?

Some recent movies that I have been rewatching are The Batman and Asteroid City. I am blown away by the production on those!

The Royal Tenenbaums and Waiting for Guffman I am down to rewatch any night of the week!

Thank you TJ!
