Get to know the filmmaker: Ling Han

An interview with the Director of Chain, screening at the 2024 Mosaic World Film Festival.

“Chain,” directed by Ling Han, is a 3D animated short film featuring charming characters and a sophisticated environment. It uniquely tells the story of the mantis catching the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind. “Chain” is visually stunning and emotionally rich, expressing nature’s survival instincts and prompting viewers to ponder life’s deeper questions.

1. What drew you to create this film?

After landing two quality animation jobs at Disney and EA in our industry, I wondered how I could push my skills to the next level as a 3D animator. I believe directing is a way to challenge myself, so I searched for a story that I wanted to tell. Since there aren’t many animated shorts internationally that are based on my culture, I decided to use a Chinese proverb for our film. The story of “CHAIN” is based on this proverb, and I’m more than happy to tell such a unique and meaningful story. However, after starting out, I eventually realized that finishing a short film is much harder than I thought. Luckily, my teammates have been super helpful, especially our producer Tzu-Ying, who is a wonderfully reliable partner. Thanks to the dedication, hard work, and collaboration of the entire team, we were able to successfully complete this film.

2. What does filmmaking mean to you?
Being a filmmaker is one of the main motivations for me to study animation. I want to tell stories that are not only meaningful to me, but also to others.
Just like how Pixar’s films, such as “A Bug’s Life” and “Inside Out,” influenced my growth, I want to create meaningful stories that have a similar impact on others.

3. What advice would you give students or beginners that want to make films?
Keep a curious mind about the world and try to find a simple idea that gives you an “aha” moment, one that you truly enjoy.
This way, you will always have passion for what you want to do and never give up.
Additionally, don’t forget to find some like-minded friends who can collaborate with you on what you all love and are passionate about.

4. What films do you watch again and again?
Pixar’s “Soul” and “Coco” hold special meaning for me. “Soul” teaches me to appreciate life and what we have.
We may be just regular, tiny individuals in the world, but does it really matter? Appreciating what we have and being happy is enough.
I cry every time I watch “Coco“. It always reminds me of my grandma, who treated me well. I hope she’s happy with the person I am now, and I miss her.
That’s the power of a good story—you love it, you cry, and most importantly, you learn something from it.

Thank you Ling!
